Counseling and Psychotherapy with Children and Adolescents: Theory and Practice for School and Clinical Settings Review

Counseling and Psychotherapy with Children and Adolescents, Third Edition has been a valuable addition to my personal llibrary. As a graduate student, I am constantly in search of state-of-the-art resources that I feel will enhance my skills once I begin to practice. Every grad. student/novice counselor needs to be aware of the major schools of thought as theory drives practice. This book offers the reader the chance to become familiar with the latest thinking and practice using the seven major approaches to counseling and psychotherapeutic interventions with children and adolescents.

I have used this book many times over in writing research reports and it has served me well. This text is chock-full of useful information; everything from multicultural counseling to ethical issues. I would have liked to see more written on the areas of schizophrenia, and suicide.

Although a bit pricey, this book is valuable as a supplemental or main text for the student, and reference for the novice therapist.

Criminal Conduct and Substance Abuse Treatment for Adolescents: Pathways to Self-Discovery and Change: The Provider's Guide Review

I'm a substance abuse counselor who recently took on a Juvenile Drug Court treatment group. I've used Milkman's Strategies book in the past with adults and was thrilled to find this book for use with adolescents. After just a few weeks of using this manual, the group members are already exhibiting considerable improvement in both knowledge and understanding of substance abuse and criminal conduct. These books are a perfect guide for working with substance abusing criminal offenders.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy with Suicidal Adolescents Review

This book is a great adjunct to anyone interested in DBT. Not that it should be used instead of Marsha's original, but this one could be considered more of a condensed and easier to read version. The book itself is very well written to the point that I felt compelled to keep reading. The therapy itself is very similar to the regular DBT protocol with the major difference being the inclusion of family. I think this book does a good job at explaining and showing how those small differences make a major impact into the therapy itself. Highly recommended.

The Adolescent Psyche: Jungian and Winnicottian Perspectives Review

An increasing number of adolescents are being referred for psychotherapy and psychiatric treatment but there are a great many difficulties in reaching the adolescent client, and the number of successful outcomes is low. The Adolescent Psyche offers a psychological framework based on the work of Jung and Winnicott, demonstrating how adolescence is really a unique stage of development in the life cycle, rather than a mere recapitulation of childhood as is traditionally thought. Through the presentation of case studies, Richard Frankel shows how this theoretical framework can be put into clinical practice.

Handbook of Childhood and Adolescent Obesity (Issues in Clinical Child Psychology) Review

Within the past two generations alone, child and adolescent obesity has more than doubled for some age groups and tripled for others. Consequently, the extraordinary number of school-age children now being diagnosed with what were once considered adult-onset disorders hypertension, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, and related cardio-pulmonary conditions has catapulted pediatric obesity to the forefront of national attention. Yet even as recognition grows, reliable, scientifically tested information and methods often get lost in the media crush of quick fixes and hyped-up news stories.

Now, in one comprehensive, easy-to-access volume, the Handbook of Childhood and Adolescent Obesity reveals the scope of the problem in terms of its psychological burden, its health consequences, and the available prevention and treatment options with the most current empirical and clinical knowledge available. This volume provides readers not only raw data, but also a framework for translating findings into effective, efficient practice assessment, treatment, and prevention. This volume:

  • Emphasizes developmental considerations the specific information most relevant to toddlers, school-age children, and adolescents.
  • Examines sociocultural and economic risk factors and their attendant treatment issues.
  • Addresses the particular challenges of treating overweight children with psychiatric comorbidities.
  • Discusses weight management intervention strategies in home, school, and community settings.
  • Outlines model intervention programs for overweight/obese children and youth.
  • Features special chapters on emerging topics of interest, including behavioral genetics, binge eating, technology-based approaches to weight control, and the concept of the obesigenic environment.

The Handbook of Childhood and Adolescent Obesity is a vital reference for child psychologists and psychiatrists as well as school and counseling psychologists, social workers, educators, and public health and medical professionals.

Assessment and Treatment Activities for Children, Adolescents, and Families: Practitioners Share Their Most Effective Techniques Review

I got three of these books by Liana Lowenstein and I find them very valuable in my therapy work with children and adolescents. I am a beginning therapist so I still rely heavily on resources like this to get the creative juices flowing. The only thing that is missing from this book, but present in the others, is a list in front that tells what the intervention is suitable for, suggested age range and treatment mode (individual, group or family).

Treating And Preventing Adolescent Mental Health Disorders: What We Know And What We Don't Know, A Research Agenda For Improving The Mental Health Of Our Youth (A Research Agenda) Review

This hardbound tome (818 pages total) is an invaluable reference for the mental health professional who works with adolescents. It was a an impressive project , the Adolescent Mental Health Initiative, sponsored by the Annenberg Foundation and the Annenberg Public Policy Center that addressed what is known about mental health disorders in the adolescent years. Six commissions with distinguished scholars contributed their expertise on adolescent depression and bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse disorders and youth suicide. Each section is clear and thorough conceptually and also provides various treatment modalities and prevention strategies. There are also helpful graphs and charts incorporated throughout. This book has current research, lucid summaries and conclusions. In addition to the main focus of mental illness, this book includes the important work of the seventh commission---Beyond Disorder, the positive perspective on youth development which deals with how we can help our youth prepare to lead happy successful lives. The final chapters deal with the stigma of mental illness, the role of primary care doctors and the role of the front-line people who deal with adolescents: school-based mental health professionals. This work is valuable not only for the scholars, the clinicians and the parents of adolescents but the policy makers who make the decisions affecting the lives of our youth.

Adolescent Gangs: Old Issues, New Approaches Review

The issue of youth violence is of growing concern in America's communities. In many settings, the violence perpetrated and experienced by young people is the result of the behavior of gangs. They are not a new creation in our society but have been around for most of this century, if not before. Adolescent Gangs: Old Issues, New Approaches offers a collection of chapters dealing with how to deal with gangs effectively. The book moves beyond the usual position of describing gangs and gang members as social misfits. Rather, the book operates from the basic belief that gang members are normal people, who often participate in abnormal behavior, in search of a place for themselves in the communities in which they live. This book examines new and creative ways of thinking about gangs and how to respond to them.

Being Adolescent: Conflict And Growth In The Teenage Years Review

Have you wondered what it is like to be an adolescent? Day in and day out? Dealing with the daily details of life at home and at school? Are you a parent, teacher, or other adult who wants to learn about what goes on inside the adolescents you interact with?

This book describes a great approach to answering these questions using an innovative research protocol. Adolescents were asked to carry beepers throughout the day, and when they were beeped, they wrote down their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors at random moments throughout the day. They obtained many interesting results that gives insight into the daily lives of adolescents, whether at school, at home, or with friends.

In general, they found that adolescents exhibited more extremes of emotions than adults, as well as more self-consciousness and embarrassment. Although this conclusion would not surprise most people, the strength of the findings really comes through in the text. Reading the accumulated data gives a broad range of experiences from numerous individuals, and gives insight into how individual adolescents respond in various situations.

It's a fascinating read, and I really felt that I could get into the skin of these adolescents and get a sense of their daily thoughts and emotions. The diversity of adolescents covered in these studies may be limited, but what is presented is quite good.

I was assigned this book for a graduate education class on adolescent development. We referred to this book often during class discussions, even though it was one of several books we read. I highly recommend the book for parents and educators alike.

Child & Adolescent Therapy : Science and Art Review

I found the book to be very clear and comprehensive, covering the main theoretical orientations and the common diagnostic categories. It integrates the science and art of therapy by providing user-friendly summaries of outcome research with clinically practical instruction in how to work with kids. The critical case materials and examples of therapeutically useful words to use with children in a variety of clinical situations are very helpful. I was pleased by the lively and interesting writing and inspired by the satisfaction that can be achieved in this work.

Group Work with Adolescents, Second Edition: Principles and Practice (Social Work Practice with Children and Families) Review

MaleKoff's book is an extraordinary resource for any who hope to understand the world of adolescents, and the skills that are necessary to work successfully with them. Malekoff brings to his writing several decades of work with these young adults and he has a profound understanding of the difficult and often frightening world they inhabit. The book is sound counceptually, and refers freely to the literature. Malekoff writes with grace, and empathy, as well as with humor. This particular quality, important for work with all ages, is essential in work with this age group.Malekoff also is a published poet, and the book often uses poetry, his own and that of others,to teach and inform the reader. Work with groups has been neglected for many years, as professionals have tended to find it too difficult and unpredictable. Now, Malekoff has shown us the way, and his book will be of great use for social workers with groups, for teachers, and for others who want to work effectively with these young people. The book also is a powerful testimony to the effectiveness of the group work method of social work practice in serving this population.

Adolescence as a stage in development is a period of great change and emotional development together with both social and intellectual transformations. Adolescent Risk Behaviors: Why Teens Experiment and Strategies to Keep Them Safe (Current Perspectives in Psychology) Review

This book focuses on the crucial role that relationships play in the lives of teenagers.  The authors particularly examine the ways that healthy relationships can help teens avoid such common risk behaviors as substance abuse, dating violence, sexual assault, and unsafe sexual practices. Addressing the current lack of effective prevention programs for teens, they present new strategies for encouraging healthy choices.
The book first traces differences between the "rules of relating" for boys and girls and discusses typical and atypical patterns of experimentation in teens. The authors identify the common link among risk behaviors: the relationship connection. In the second part of the book, they examine the principles of successful programs used by schools and communities to cultivate healthy adolescent development. An illuminating conclusion describes the key ingredients for engaging adolescents, their parents, teachers, and communities in the effort to promote healthy, nonviolent relationships among teens.
