As a graduate student, I am constantly in search of state-of-the-art resources that I feel will enhance my skills once I begin to practice. Every grad. student/novice counselor needs to be aware of the major schools of thought as theory drives practice. This book offers the reader the chance to become familiar with the latest thinking and practice using the seven major approaches to counseling and psychotherapeutic interventions with children and adolescents.
I have used this book many times over in writing research reports and it has served me well. This text is chock-full of useful information; everything from multicultural counseling to ethical issues. I would have liked to see more written on the areas of schizophrenia, and suicide.
Although a bit pricey, this book is valuable as a supplemental or main text for the student, and reference for the novice therapist.

Buy it here now!

Criminal Conduct and Substance Abuse Treatment for Adolescents: Pathways to Self-Discovery and Change: The Provider's Guide

I'm a substance abuse counselor who recently took on a Juvenile Drug Court treatment group. I've used Milkman's Strategies book in the past with adults and was thrilled to find this book for use with adolescents. Not that it should be used instead of Marsha's original, but this one could be considered more of a condensed and easier to read version. The book itself is very well written to the point that I felt compelled to keep reading. The therapy itself is very similar to the regular DBT protocol with the major difference being the inclusion of family. I think this book does a good job at explaining and showing how those small differences make a major impact into the therapy itself. Highly recommended.

Buy it here now!

The Adolescent Psyche: Jungian and Winnicottian Perspectives

An increasing number of adolescents are being referred for psychotherapy and psychiatric treatment but there are a great many difficulties in reaching the adolescent client, and the number of successful outcomes is low. The Adolescent Psyche offers a psychological framework based on the work of Jung and Winnicott, demonstrating how adolescence is really a unique stage of development in the life cycle, rather than a mere recapitulation of childhood as is traditionally thought. It was a an impressive project , the Adolescent Mental Health Initiative, sponsored by the Annenberg Foundation and the Annenberg Public Policy Center that addressed what is known about mental health disorders in the adolescent years. Six commissions with distinguished scholars contributed their expertise on adolescent depression and bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, substance abuse disorders and youth suicide. Each section is clear and thorough conceptually and also provides various treatment modalities and prevention strategies. There are also helpful graphs and charts incorporated throughout. This book has current research, lucid summaries and conclusions. In addition to the main focus of mental illness, this book includes the important work of the seventh commission---Beyond Disorder, the positive perspective on youth development which deals with how we can help our youth prepare to lead happy successful lives. The final chapters deal with the stigma of mental illness, the role of primary care doctors and the role of the front-line people who deal with adolescents: school-based mental health professionals. This work is valuable not only for the scholars, the clinicians and the parents of adolescents but the policy makers who make the decisions affecting the lives of our youth.

Buy it here now!
In many settings, the violence perpetrated and experienced by young people is the result of the behavior of gangs. They are not a new creation in our society but have been around for most of this century, if not before. Adolescent Gangs: Old Issues, New Approaches offers a collection of chapters dealing with how to deal with gangs effectively. The book moves beyond the usual position of describing gangs and gang members as social misfits. Rather, the book operates from the basic belief that gang members are normal people, who often participate in abnormal behavior, in search of a place for themselves in the communities in which they live. This book examines new and creative ways of thinking about gangs and how to respond to them.

Buy it here now!

Being Adolescent: Conflict And Growth In The Teenage Years

Have you wondered what it is like to be an adolescent? Day in and day out? Dealing with the daily details of life at home and at school? Are you a parent, teacher, or other adult who wants to learn about what goes on inside the adolescents you interact with?
This book describes a great approach to answering these questions using an innovative research protocol. Adolescents were asked to carry beepers throughout the day, and when they were beeped, they wrote down their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors at random moments throughout the day. They obtained many interesting results that gives insight into the daily lives of adolescents, whether at school, at home, or with friends.
In general, they found that adolescents exhibited more extremes of emotions than adults, as well as more self-consciousness and embarrassment. Although this conclusion would not surprise most people, the strength of the findings really comes through in the text. Reading the accumulated data gives a broad range of experiences from numerous individuals, and gives insight into how individual adolescents respond in various situations.
It's a fascinating read, and I really felt that I could get into the skin of these adolescents and get a sense of their daily thoughts and emotions. The diversity of adolescents covered in these studies may be limited, but what is presented is quite good.
I was assigned this book for a graduate education class on adolescent development. We referred to this book often during class discussions, even though it was one of several books we read. I highly recommend the book for parents and educators alike.

Buy it here now!

Child & Adolescent Therapy : Science and Art

I found the book to be very clear and comprehensive, covering the main theoretical orientations and the common diagnostic categories. Malekoff brings to his writing several decades of work with these young adults and he has a profound understanding of the difficult and often frightening world they inhabit. The book is sound counceptually, and refers freely to the literature. Malekoff writes with grace, and empathy, as well as with humor. This particular quality, important for work with all ages, is essential in work with this age group.Malekoff also is a published poet, and the book often uses poetry, his own and that of others,to teach and inform the reader. Work with groups has been neglected for many years, as professionals have tended to find it too difficult and unpredictable. Now, Malekoff has shown us the way, and his book will be of great use for social workers with groups, for teachers, and for others who want to work effectively with these young people. The book also is a powerful testimony to the effectiveness of the group work method of social work practice in serving this population.

Buy it here now!

Adolescent Development: The Essential Readings (Essential Readings in Developmental Psychology)

Adolescence as a stage in development is a period of great change and emotional development together with both social and intellectual transformations. Adolescent Development: The Essential Readings guides the reader throughout the maze of issues that emerge in the transition from childhood to adulthood. Each article is introduced by the editor, and contextualized within the wider debate of developmental psychology and the area of adolescence in particular. The introductions are designed to delineate the importance to each chapter and help guide the reader to sensitive points or issues. They set the stage for a selection of readings on theory, biological growth and development, issues of pubescence, and individual development, together with a variety of social problems that are experienced at this stage in life. The individual studies bring to life the manner in which adolescent behaviour is investigated, represent some of the most compelling current science that focuses on adolescence, and demonstrate the wide range of creative scholarship that can be found in this are of study. The readings will stimulate thoughts about the study of adolescence and push forward the reader's understanding of ideas of adolescence.

Buy it here now!

Adolescent Risk Behaviors: Why Teens Experiment and Strategies to Keep Them Safe (Current Perspectives in Psychology)

This book focuses on the crucial role that relationships play in the lives of teenagers. The authors particularly examine the ways that healthy relationships can help teens avoid such common risk behaviors as substance abuse, dating violence, sexual assault, and unsafe sexual practices. Addressing the current lack of effective prevention programs for teens, they present new strategies for encouraging healthy choices.
The book first traces differences between the "rules of relating" for boys and girls and discusses typical and atypical patterns of experimentation in teens. The authors identify the common link among risk behaviors: the relationship connection. In the second part of the book, they examine the principles of successful programs used by schools and communities to cultivate healthy adolescent development. An illuminating conclusion describes the key ingredients for engaging adolescents, their parents, teachers, and communities in the effort to promote healthy, nonviolent relationships among teens.

Buy it here now!

Adolescents and Risk: Making Sense of Adolescent Psychology (Making Sense of Psychology)

Substance abuse, gambling, sexual promiscuity, violence, mental health problems, suicide: all are risky and dangerous consequences of adolescent instability. Through the implementation of psychological research and basic theories, Johnson and Malow-Iroff expertly assess each specific risk behavior as it correlates with demographics, socio-economic statuses, and cultural factors surrounding today's youth. In addition, this book provides resources for handling harmful situations facing adolescents, offering practical and straightforward methods to aid one in negotiating positive paths for those in distress. Parents, educators, and adolescents alike will only benefit from knowing the causes of adolescent risk-taking and the ways of preventing such behavior.

Each chapter is devoted to a specific risk that many adolescents take throughout their teenage years. These include: drug abuse, gambling, sex, violence, and suicide. Johnson and Malow-Iroff discuss the mental health problems that lead to dangerous activities. Each topic explains the causes that lead to these risky behaviors, ways to prevent them, and advice that will be useful to parents and educators in addressing these issues.

Buy it here now!

Treating Abused Adolescents

What a great introduction to treating teens with abusehistories! Leaders in the field encourage the study of all kinds of males. Books about men in their prime are most common; the number of books on older males is growing; this book is a nice contribution regarding adolescent males. To be honest, some chapters are just works where authors say, "I did research on Group X. Here's what I learned about the subgroup consisting of adolescent males." Still, this was a pretty good text.

The anthology is diverse in terms of race. In fact, at least one-third of the book covers African-American males. Perhaps this book should be classified under African-American studies. The book is diverse in terms of nation (the United States, China, Britain). Still, I thought more of a cross-national comparison in the chapters would have been useful. The book is diverse in terms of class. However, low-income males were labeled as such and upper-income males are left as unnamed, perhaps problematically "naturalized."

This book is definitely for psychology majors, more than any other group. Most chapters are quantitative and some are qualitative. For those who hate numbers-crunching, they can skip over methods and just read the intros and discussions. A close friend of mine was a psychology major who just HATES the field. When I asked him why, he said, "So many studies just prove the obvious. Fruits are good for your health. Getting enough sleep helps you during the day. Duh!" This book is FILLED with obvious hypothesis and conclusions. One chapter proved that boys from functional families perform better in school. Thanks for the numerical proof, but any thinking person already knows that. On the one hand, this book was so informative, but some of what is covered may insult the readers' intelligence.

Some chapters in the book did annoy me. For example, one chapter is titled "Boys in Men's Clothing." I thought it would be about male youth fashion, but it wasn't. It was about "hypervulnerability," a concept that was ill-defined an gobbledygookish. One chapter about black males, fathers, and suicidal thinking proved that father involvement may curb suicide. Again, duh! But secondly, the proof was for drug-free youth. Why wasn't substance abuse mentioned in the title's chapter then? There was some good stuff here. As always, Pedro Noguera's addition was informative, timely, and fantastic. I also liked the Hmong chapter and thought it was a good introduction to the text.

This is not a book for everyday concerned parents of male teens. It's for those in the psych field. Still, I give it thumbs up.

Buy it here now!

Adolescent Suicide: An Integrated Approach to the Assessment of Risk and Protective Factors

A guide to the assessment of adolescent suicide risk in clinical and non-clinical settings by two experts in the field, Peter M. Gutierrez and Augustine Osman

Suicide and suicide attempts among adolescents are significant public health problems. Consequently, identifying at-risk youth in time to provide intervention not only helps to prevent suicides and suicide-related injuries but improves young persons overall quality of life and increases the chances for healthy and productive lives. Believing that adolescent suicide can be prevented, Gutierrez and Osman have developed a set of tools for assessing suicide risk, designed especially for adolescents. In contrast to the most common assessments that focus solely on risk factors, these tools measure both risk and protective factors in order to predict more accurately the probability of suicide and suicide-related behaviors. This guide is designed to enable nonspecialists as well as professional clinicians, researchers, school psychologists, and other school-based professionals to select appropriate assessment tools and to evaluate the results.

Recognized experts in suicidology, both Gutierrez and Osman have published numerous specialized articles. This book synthesizes their work in a manner accessible to all practitioners responsible for identifying and working with at-risk adolescents. Included is an appendix of five assessment tools that can easily be photocopied for repeated use.

Buy it here now!

Adolescent Psychotherapy Homework Planner (PracticePlanners®)

The review by Orlando presents faulty information. Contrary to what was written by Orlando, the book contains assignments on such topics as Conduct Disorder, Chemical Dependence, Eating Disorder, Peer/Sibling Conflict, Runaway, Sexual Abuse Perpetrator, Sexual Abuse Victim, and Mania/Hypomania as well as common problems such as Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, Low Self-Esteem and Oppositional Defiant. The book does NOT contain exercises for Enuresis/Encopresis. I expect that Orlando was looking at the Brief Child Therapy Homework Planner when the review was written.

Buy it here now!

Treating the Tough Adolescent: A Family-Based, Step-by-Step Guide (The Guilford Family Therapy Series)

Dr Scott P.Sells has the experience and academic background to write on tough adolescents. With his work in correctional education Dr Sells has released his Phd research in an easy to adapt and read format that will prevent parents everywhere from continuing to tear their hair out over their teenage children. The 15 step flow chart will become your best friend as you neutralise the outside influences on your adolescent and take charge in an effective and ultimately successful strategy designed to move tough adolescents from problems to self sufficiency.
Timely advice is written within the research that Dr Sells has done with hundreds of problem adolescents and their families.

In using this book within my family I have found that formalising and making agreements with my adolescent and our parenting has removed hours of time and money spent on therapy and medical advice, not to mention the school appointments with teachers and Principals. Dr Sells explains what to do when relapses occur and how to remove unwanted influences on your adolescents life.

This book puts the parent back in charge of the family, and explains how this leads to self sufficiency in the adolescent as they move into early adulthood.
Treating the Tough Adolescent - A Family-Based, Step by Step Guide is easy to read and well researched and referenced.
I can heartily recommend this book to any parent facing difficult problems such as ADHD, truancy, delinquency, aggression, grafitti crimes, substance abuse, disrespect, and many other issues with their teenage children. It will also serve as a rough guide to these problems for High School teachers both in the classroom and in dealing with parent interviews.
Child Psychiatrists will find this text illuminating in it's ground breaking research into how parents can and must take charge for change to take place in tough adolescents' lives.

Buy it here now!

Adolescent Portraits: Identity, Relationships, and Challenges (6th Edition)

Adolescent Portraits: Identity, Relationships, and Challenges, written by Garrod, Smulyan, Powers, and Kilkenny (2000), is a collection of personal stories written by college students. The stories consist of the students' recollections of events that occurred during their adolescent years. This book provides much insight into the development of adolescents, while it also aides in the understanding and development of current theories. The case studies collected by the authors are excellent tools for gaining insight into the mind of the adolescent. The authors of the case studies not only narrate events from their past, but also provide personal perspectives as to why they reacted in certain ways and held particular concerns during their adolescent years.
"The way in which we view adolescence depends, to a large extent, on our perceptions of human nature and the relationship of the individual to society" (Garrod et al., 2000, p. 1). Current theories are independently and personally based on such perspectives. Before the authors present the adolescents' case studies, they discuss the various contributors to current adolescent theory. These contributors include theorists such as Locke, Rousseau, Hall, and Mead. By presenting the case studies, the authors show these theories at work.
The case studies are divided into three sections: "Identity," "Relationships," and "Challenges." The first section, "Identity," involves Erikson's Psychosocial Developmental Theory, particularly the stage of "identity verses role confusion." Believed by Erikson to be the dominating challenge during the adolescent years, this stage is characterized by the need to establish one's individuality in the world. According to his theory, it is only after this stage is completed that the individual is ready to develop intimate relationships with others.
In the following section, "Relationships," Erikson's belief of obtaining intimacy only by first successfully achieving personal identity is disputed. Many theorists believe that intimacy may actually be a source of achieving one's personal identity. For example, Sullivan believed that the development of intimacy may be related to relationships with best-friends. It is in these types of relationships that individuals are able to experience, first-hand, how various roles and attitudes are viewed by others. Other types of relationships one might encounter during his or her adolescent years "include close friendships, cliques, peer groups and crowds, and romantic relationships" (p. 132). Furthermore, psychoanalytic theorists such as Anna Freud and Blos believe that adolescence is a critical time of separation from one's parents. Even so, theories maintain that adolescents have a need to preserve a close, meaningful relationship with their families of origin. The case studies that are seen in this section concentrate on the importance of the development and continuity of relationships throughout the adolescent years.
In the final section, "Challenges," the authors present a collection of cases about adolescents who are caught up in various challenges that appear quite difficult to overcome. It is in this section that the authors present the phenomenon of adolescents who grow up in extremely difficult, if not tragic, situations, yet still develop into healthy, successful adults. The challenges presented in this section are "(1) a severe stutter and serious sexual abuse in early childhood, (2) the emotional crisis surrounding an abortion in adolescence, (3) a journey from war refugee to immigrant to the United States and gradual acculturation, and (4) a family breaking apart under the stresses of immigration to the United States and the mental illness of a parent" (Garrod et al., 2000, pp. 249-250).
One might wonder how the adolescents described in the preceding paragraph might manage to live through such tragedy, yet still develop into "normal," healthy adults. According to the authors, "self-understanding is one of the more important aspects of emerging adolescent abilities for overcoming serious challenges" (Garrod et al., 2000, p. 250). It is only with this self-understanding that one might be able to live through such atrocities, yet still continue with healthy physical, emotional, and psychological development.
Though it must be considered that the sample of individuals who wrote the case studies seen in Adolescent Portraits: Identity, Relationships, and Challenges may have higher than average academic markings, it may be understood that it is a fairly average sample. Therefore, the cases presented may be assumed to be typical of "normal" adolescent development. With this assumption, the case studies allow for further development of the theoretical perspectives which are already presented. Furthermore, the case studies leave room for personal evaluation and introspection, both of which may lead to a better understanding of current theories as well as the development of personal theories.

Buy it here now!

Violent Video Game Effects on Children and Adolescents: Theory, Research, and Public Policy

It's interesting when reading about how video games influence violent behavior. It's like reading up on studies about ESP, they are interesting to read about but very clearly flawed in many ways. Putting aside the fact that many of the studies presented in this book lack the basic requirements of an acceptable study (Double-Blind Experiments with no room for observer bias) In the end this book presents generic ideas that can be changed slightly to apply to anything. Video games desensitize children to violence and promote aggressive behavior. Competitive sports desensitize children to having fun and increase likelihood of back-stabbing and double-crossing to get ahead and win.

Nonetheless this topic brings to mind the subject of angry, ignorant parents who will no doubt eat this up like another garbage-filled episode of Dr. Phil. To those parents I say this. Don't want your kids to play violent video games? Fine, don't buy it for them. There are ESRB ratings for a reason. Don't know what ESRB ratings are? Big surprise, hence making you an ignorant, angry parent. Let's forget the fact that all video game systems have parental controls on them and that each video game sold has a rating on it that states if there is any mature material on there, let's just focus on vague correlations that say that kids who play video games are more prone to aggressive behavior. Hey while we're lying to ourselves we might as well believe that we're actually in IRaq to spread democracy. Let the good times roll.

Buy it here now!

Latina Girls: Voices of Adolescent Strength in the U.S.

This work includes a broad range of research on the current realities of Latina teens in the U.S. I found several of the articles to be very insightful and enlightening. "Latina Adolescent Girls" should help policymakers and service providers design programs to support Latina teens, and by extension, Latinos in America. This kind of positive scholarship is essential as more and more of America becomes defined by a bi-cultural reality, in schools, workplaces and other settings. This book should contribute to better understanding and policymaking that affects America's new majority minority.

Buy it here now!

Bleeding to Ease the Pain: Cutting, Self-Injury, and the Adolescent Search for Self (Abnormal Psychology)

A brilliantly readable book that is neither pop-psychology nor esoteric medical literature, but rather the clear-eyed insights of an experienced practitioner with sound and articulate advice to providers, teachers and parents. Paula Barrett and Thomas Ollendick have selected world-leading contributors to provide overviews of empirically validated intervention and prevention initiatives.
Arranged in three parts, Part I lays theoretical foundations of "treatments that work" with children and adolescents. Part II presents the evidence base for the treatment of a host of behaviour problems, whilst Part III contains exciting prevention programs that attempt to intervene with several child and adolescent problems before they become disorders.
All in all, Handbook of Interventions that Work with Children and Adolescents presents encouraging evidence that we can intervene successfully at the psychosocial level with children and adolescents who already have major psychiatric disorders and, as importantly, that we can even prevent some of these disorders from o ccurring in the first place.

Buy it here now!

California School of Professional Psychology Handbook of Juvenile Forensic Psychology

The Handbook of Juvenile Forensic Psychology is a comprehensive handbook for mental health professionals working with juveniles in the criminal justice system and in family and dependency courts. I would be concerned with any text that would attempt to simply spell out how to conduct a broad category of treatments, such as "brief intervention." Instead, this edited book includes work from some of the foremost authorities in the field and even has a few chapters that detail some specific intervention plans that were a burgeoning of therapy modes. Most importantly, the authors dare to present novel yet controversial approaches to framing adolescent substance use and treatment. Of particular value is chapter 21, "Impulse Control Disorders Not Elsewhere Classified," wherein Steven Thurber and associate, clarify and successfully delineate a long-time problem within the monumentally crucial arena of Disorders of the Young. This specific chapter, in tandem with the overall approach of the book, affords the reader the valuable distinction between generally accepted mythical and unsubstantiated beliefs (i.e., beliefs that are almost "Hollywood-like" portrayals and "theories" of human behavior), and scientifically demonstrated and supported realities of the human condition.

Buy it here now!

Handbook of Evidence-Based Therapies for Children and Adolescents: Bridging Science and Practice (Issues in Clinical Child Psychology)

Growing numbers of young people—some 10% to 20% of school-age populations—have mental health problems requiring intervention, and current policy initiatives identify evidence-based therapies as the most effective and relevant forms of treatment. By reviewing evidence-based treatments (EBTs) across a wide spectrum of conditions, the Handbook of Evidence-Based Therapies for Children and Adolescents: Bridging Science and Practice closes the gaps between children's needs and services as well as those between research, training, and practice, Several EBT options, both proved and promising, are offered for each covered disorder and are bolstered by case examples, tables, and reference lists. Features include chapters on implementation issues such as diversity, family treatment, assessment strategies, and community settings, and step-by-step guidance for the researcher looking to gather empirical support for therapies. With comprehensive coverage provided by numerous leading experts in the field, this volume covers the broadest range of disorders over the widest pediatric-adolescent age range, including: Behavioral disorders, ADHD, aggression, bullying. Phobias, panic disorders, school refusal, and anxiety. Autism and pervasive developmental disorders. Depression, mood disorders, and suicidal behavior. Alcohol and drug abuse. Eating disorders and obesity. PTSD. With its emphasis on flexibility and attention to emerging issues, the Handbook of Evidence-Based Therapies for Children and Adolescents is essential reading for anyone who works to address the mental health needs of children, including clinical child, school, and counseling psychologists; clinical social workers; and child psychiatrists as well as advanced-graduate level students in these and other related fields.

Buy it here now!

The Adolescent Psychotherapy Progress Notes Planner (PracticePlanners®)

I bought hoping that this could help me with my notes but instead got softeware that I could not use, it requires 2007 Micrsoft office 2007.A $300 software system. It organizes disorders according to the DSM-IV, and allows readers to "diagnose" and consider treatment options before seeing how a case was actually diagnosed and treated. It provides detailed descriptions of a range of clinical problems affecting children and adolescents -- recognizing that symptoms and associated features of a disorder may be quite different, at times even seemingly opposite, of symptoms presented by adults -- and illustrates some of the ways these problems can be examined and treated. Section I presents case scenarios along with space for readers to write their ideas about diagnosis and treatment. Section II includes the diagnosis made by the therapist in the case, the rationale behind the diagnosis, and treatment considerations. Presents cases that focus on "classic" symptoms and problematic issues. Stresses the social context in which symptoms occur -- even when these social factors are not directly related to diagnosis. For psychiatric social workers, nurses, and counselors.

Buy it here now!

Infants, Children, and Adolescents (6th Edition) (MyDevelopmentLab Series)

The book is well written and very interesting. Straightforward language and ample illustrations introduce the reader to the key areas in child development. The material is carefully organized to be as student-friendly as possible. Each chapter addresses a topic, such as perception, verbal communication, and theory of mind. The content in this book will provide a foundation on which future learnings can be placed. It is very well written and full of details about the field of developmental psychopathology, causal factors, and particular childhood disorders. With so many claims in the pop literature, this book is a wonderful resource to help others understand what is true and what is not so true. I also recommend this book to parents who have an intense need to know the research in the field. For students to understand child and adolescent psychopathology, they must explore the complex interplay of developmental, biological, familiar, cultural, and historical factors that shape behavior. Child Psychopathology integrates these varied contexts in a user-friendly format that allows students to fully understand child maladaptive behavior. This text employs state-of-the-art material combining case studies, diagnostic issues, research, and Internet Web sites to illustrate that child and adolescent "abnormal" behavior does not occur in a vacuum, and that inside of each of these disorders are real children with real strengths and weaknesses.

Buy it here now!

Adolescent Psychology, 6th Edition (Annual Editions)

This Sixth Edition of ANNUAL EDITIONS: ADOLESCENT PSYCHOLOGY provides convenient, inexpensive access to current articles selected from the best of the public press.
